지난 83년 문을 연「권갑용바둑도장」을 통해 배출된 이세돌 최철한 박정환 김지석 백홍석 원성진 강동윤 이영구 등 46명의 프로들은 지금 한국바둑의 젖줄을 담당하고 있다. 오히려 랭킹10위 이내에 8명이나 권갑용이 손수 기른 제자들로 채워졌다는 것은 한국 바둑근대사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 업적이다.(본문 아래에 영문 인터뷰 게재) 

한국바둑의‘영원한 사감(舍監)’권갑용(56)이 이번엔 국제바둑학교장으로 변신했다. 국제바둑학교의 공식이름은「권갑용국제바둑아카데미」(KIBA-Kownkapyong International Baduk Academy). 서울 반포에 위치한 한 권갑용국제아카데미는 바둑과 외국어를 같이 가르치며 세계화를 주도할 지도자를 양성하는 것이 목표란다.

그를 만나 개교한 지 한 달이 된 국제바둑학교에 대해 들어보는 시간을 가졌다.

도장을 언제 이전하셨어요? 국제바둑학교라, 아~주 생소합니다.
제가 바둑도장을 시작한 지 30년이 되었습니다. 그동안 많은 동량지재를 길러냈지만, 이제 바둑도 빠르게 세계화되고 있습니다. 입단자를 배출하는 것도 여전히 중요한 일이며, 입단자 또한 전인교육과 최고의 두뇌를 가진 스포츠인으로 성장해야 하지 않을까 생각했습니다. 그래서 오랜 준비 끝에 지난 3월2일 국제바둑학교를 개설했습니다. 변신했다기보다는 업그레이드되었다는 표현이 옳겠죠.

지도철학에 어떤 변화가 생긴 것입니까?
변화라면 변화죠. 30년 동안 바둑을 가르치면서 뛰어난 자질을 갖춘 영재를 발굴하여 바둑계의 큰 나무로 성장시킨 보람을 느낍니다. 그리고 바둑을 직업으로 삼지는 않았지만 어려서 배운 바둑을 발판삼아 의사, 학자, 직장인 등 자신의 삶을 성공적으로 살고 있는 제자들도 많이 있습니다. 그들이 한결같이 하는 얘기들은 '바둑 덕에 멋진 인생을 살게 되었다’고 합디다. 영재 발굴과 더불어 어린 시기에 바둑을 제대로 접하고 배울 수 있는 장을 열어 바둑의 장점을 널리 전파할 생각으로 학교를 열게 되었습니다. 바둑을 가르치는 것도 시대에 따라 변화해야 한다고 봅니다. 외국에서 바둑사범을 하려고 해도 바둑실력을 갖춘 사람들이야 많지만 언어나 다양한 지식이 모자라서 좌절되는 경우가 많지 않습니까? 그 부분을 늦었지만 해결해야 한다고 봅니다. 한국의 훌륭한 바둑 인재들이 세계로 향해 나아가야 할 때입니다.

그럼「권갑용바둑도장」은 어떻게 되는 겁니까?
바둑도장은 그대로 있죠. 확장된 개념이라고 보면 됩니다. 도장 연구생들은 바둑공부를 지속적으로 해 온 고학년이기 때문에 바둑공부가 주가 되고 영어와 중국어를 매일 짬짬이 다지는 수준이구요, 지금부터 입학하는 어린이들에게는 아무래도 외국어와 바둑의 비중이 비슷합니다. 개교한 지 한 달 남짓이지만 학부모들의 반응이 뜨겁습니다.

그렇다면 나이 대가 다양하고 영어의 수준이 천차만별일 텐데…
유치부 초등부가 주 대상이며 유치부는 영어와 바둑의 기초를 익히고 초등부에서는 미국 초등학교과정을 배우면서 바둑도 심화단계를 배우게 됩니다. 원어민과 한국인이 공동담임제로 운영되죠. 국제바둑학교답게 100% 영어로만 수업이 진행이 됩니다. 별로 어렵지는 않아요. 중국어 또한 바둑인에게는 필수과목이라고 할 수 있죠.

학교라고 하시니까 '정말 학교인가'하고 생각하실 분이 많아요. 정식으로 학력을 인정받을 수 있다고 하던데, 구체적으로 말씀해주시죠?
KIBA는 무엇보다도 미국 학력을 그대로 인정받을 수 있는 미국 교육부 공식인가 학교입니다. 미국학교평가 인증기관 중에 가장 공신력 있는 기관인 AACS(American Association of Christian Schools), 국제학교연합인가기관 AI(Audition International), 미국사학교연합 NCPSA(National Council for Private School Accreditation)에서 정식으로 인가를 받아 학력이 인정됩니다.

그렇다면 진로가 비교적 다양해질 수 있겠는데요?
바둑전문가 과정을 수료하고 집중적인 바둑훈련을 받아서 프로가 될 수도 있는 길이 첫째입니다. 일반 대학에 진학할 경우 다양한 특례입학도 가능하겠죠. 한국기원 연구생에 선발되면 특기적성분야에 큰 강점이 될 수 있고, 영어실력이 뒷받침 되고, 학력인증도 되니 중국 미국 등 유명대학 진학에도 플러스 요인이 됩니다. 또 해외취업에도 용이하고요. 지금 문하생 가운데에서 중국에서 바둑유학을 온 경우도 많습니다. 미국 유럽 등지에서 동양문화에 관심이 커지면서 바둑 인구도 증가하고 있는데, 이를 이끌어갈 지도자가 턱없이 부족한 실정이죠.

학교 얘기 좀 해볼게요. 수업은 어떻게 이루어집니까?
키즈는 오전9시부터 오후2시까지 영어수업입니다. 미국사립학교 교과과정이죠. 3시부터 9시까지는 즐겁게 바둑공부를 하죠. 선생님은 원어민 선생님하고 정규학과과정 스페셜과정도 전문화된 선생님들이 전부 영어로 수업합니다. 중고등학생은 이미 바둑이 수준급인지라, 미국 정규과정은 좀 늦은 감이 있죠. 다만 영어가 필요하다는 것을 스스로가 느껴서 자기들끼리 클래스를 만들어서 점심시간을 줄여가면서 자발적으로 영어를 공부하고 있습니다.

아까 학부모들의 반응이 좋다고 하셨는데, 구체적으로 자랑 좀 해주시죠?
바둑을 몰랐던 엄마들도 여기에 와보시고는 영어도 배우고 바둑도 배운다며 일석이조라는 생각들이죠. 원스톱으로 진행되는 좋은 프로그램이라고들 합니다. 그리고 인근 학교에서 방과 후 활동 장소로 이용되기도 하니까 보다시피 늘 분주합니다. 중국, 홍콩 등지에서 견학프로그램으로 다녀가기도 합니다.

KIBA에 입교한 아이들이 일반 영어유치원에 비해 효율이 있다고 보십니까?
학부모님들이 먼저 압니다. 겉핥기식이 아니라 바둑, 외국어 등 양쪽이 다 전문적인 분들이 가르치기 때문에 실력적으로는 매우 흡족한 수준이죠. 바둑을 통해서 행복지수가 높아짐으로 해서 학습효과도 비례하니까요.

끝으로 국제바둑학교장으로서 포부 한마디 부탁합니다.
프로기사 46명이 제 제자입니다. 한국은 물론이고 일본의 류시훈 김수준, 대만의 천스위엔 장정핑 부부기사도 제자죠. 프로인 맞딸 권효진과 중국프로 웨량의 결혼으로 말미암아 한국 중국 일본 대만과 모두 통하게 되었습니다. 우리 도장 역시 원생들에게 10여 년 전부터 영어와 중국어 선생님을 모셔 와서 바둑과 함께 가르쳐왔는데, 그것이 국제바둑학교 탄생의 기초가 되었죠. 물론 바둑도장은 여전히 열심히 하고 있습니다만, 30년 동안 환경이 많이 바뀌었고 시대가 원하는 방향대로 가는 것이 순리라고 생각합니다. 제가 하는 일이 최선은 아닐지 몰라도 바둑계의 변화에 첫 발을 내딛었다고 보시면 옳을 것입니다. 모쪼록 지켜봐주시고 성원해 주십시오! 연락처 ☎ 권갑용국제바둑학교 02-537-0451.

Baduk finally comes to the world
Searching for a leader in the global baduk revolution

From the Kwonkapyong Baduk Institute to Kwonkapyong International Baduk Academy, the South Korean school is once again ahead of the competition.

In 1983, the Kwonkapyong Baduk Institute opened, where baduk master Kwonkapyong produced 46 professional baduk players, including Se-Dol Lee, Jeong-Hwan Park, and Chul-Hwan Choi. With former students representing the top six players in South Korea, Kwonkapyong and his students form an integral piece of the baduk community.

At age 56, famed instructor Kwonkapyong is now the principal at Kwonkapyong International Baduk Academy (KIBA). Located in the Banpo neighborhood in the heart of Seoul, the school also provides its students with English instruction to foster professional players who can compete in a global society. The academy has already been active for one month

When did you finish with the previous school and move to the new one?
I began teaching 30 years ago. Baduk has changed a lot since then, becoming worldwide in particular. Therefore, the way to teach the game has changed, too. If you look at the school as a family, there are many people involved, and if any one person fails to meet their goals, then the entire family will collapse. So, a holistic education and an aim for the best brains must be treated as one mission in order to have the best players possible. Only after much thought has this new school opened. It has been upgraded to help the students define their character and expression, rather than merely play the game correctly.

What made you change your teaching philosophy?
This is not change for the sake of change. I have been teaching for 30 years and it has been exceptionally rewarding and worthwhile. Moreover, learning baduk leads to professional careers, such as professors and doctors, and a successful life. My students thank me for the wonderful lives they are invariably living because of their education. This is why I want to give students an opportunity to learn baduk from a young age, and this is why I opened the type of school that I have now. The previous method for teaching baduk is old fashioned. For example, someone might want to teach baduk in a foreign country, but then give up because of the language barrier, even though baduk is a great sport. This is exactly the kind of problem I wish to solve, and I’m sure it’s not too late. A good Korean baduk player should jump into the wider world.

So what will happen to the old institute?
The previous school lives on in the form of KIBA, but it has been improved with the addition of the international language program. It has been open for only one month, but already the parents are fired up and responding positively. The junior high school students have been learning baduk for several years, so they mainly concentrate on the game. But for a younger student who has only recently started on his or her baduk journey, the focus will be divided evenly between baduk and international studies.

Will the varying age and English levels pose an issue?
We have two sections: Kindergarten, and elementary. In kindergarten, the students will learn English and their first steps in baduk. The elementary course follows American curriculum with a more intense baduk course. As well, the foreign and Korean teachers are homeroom teachers together. Everyone in the English program uses English exclusively at all times because it is an international school. It’s not as difficult as it sounds—the children have fun! Chinese is also a part of the curriculum.

You say this is an international school. How does that work?
KIBA is, above all else, recognized by the United States Department of Education, and is officially sanctioned. The US has some of the most respected certificate authorities in the forms of the school evaluation firm AACS (American Association of Christian Schools), the international school accreditation agency AI (Audition International), and the NCPSA (National Council for Private School Accreditation), who have all approved KIBA’s diploma program.

Then there is a great prospective future for graduates?
For students who finish the baduk program, the main course, naturally, is to become a baduk player. If a student applies for a general university, he or she will receive special consideration on his or her application. Students will also have English skills with which they can receive entrance into famous universities in China and the US. Even students from China come to Korea these days to learn baduk. I also think Europe and America are interested in Asian culture, so the worldwide population of baduk players is increasing. Unfortunately, there is no leader and there is a lack of good teachers.

Let’s talk about the schooling. What is the curriculum like?
Kindergarten English classes start at 9:00 a.m. and finish at 2:00 p.m. From 3:00 until 9:00 they learn baduk in a fun environment. All of the teachers here are very professional and understand child development. Middle and high school students are already proficient at baduk and are very keen to study English, so they study the language for one or two hours.

You told me the parents’reactions are very positive. Can you detail that for me?
Even though some parents don’t know baduk beforehand, they show interest in the game after visiting KIBA. Combining English with a baduk program is a fairly new concept, so it can startle and amaze the parents to see this all-in-one approach to education. There are nearby schools whose students come to KIBA to enjoy our afterschool programs as well. Students from China and Hong Kong also participate in our trial program to get a feel for our unique approach.

How does KIBA’s kindergarten program compare to that of a typical school?
arents know immediately that our professional team translates into a great learning environment for their children. Because of our organization and vision, parents are already pleased with the results. Through baduk, our satisfaction and the students’ personal happiness have been high. Thanks to this, their skills improve more quickly.

Do you have anything to add about your aspirations?
Forty-six of my students have already gone on to become professional players. They include Si-Hun Ryu from Japan, Su-Jun Kim from Korea, as well as Cheon Seu Wien and Jang Jeong Ping from Taiwan. My first daughter, Hyo-Jun Kwon, is marred to professional Chinese player WaiRyang, so we have worldwide presence. The motivation for KIBA was born ten years ago, when English and Chinese teachers began to teach baduk. Of course, our institute still runs well, but, over the past 30 years, our situation has shifted, and the way to be successful is to adapt to changing times, particularly in the face of globalization. I don’t know that any method of teaching baduk is perfect, but I believe that KIBA’s method is at the forefront. Please keep watching our school and cheer us on for the future!
